Coffee Snob, except the opposite of that...let’s try Coffee Nonpartisan. As in, any coffee, all the time. Devoted runner…except when I’m not. Wife to Michael, mom to eight kids. ‘Cuz I’m edgy like that. Writing, speaking, photography. Sleep yearner.

The number of detours in my life, well, it’s a lit

The number of detours in my life, well, it’s a little staggering. And somehow, some way, they’ve brought me to destinations I didn’t expect and that somehow weirdly make sense.
🔀
Tell me about a detour 🔀 destination plot twist you’ve experienced! After all, the stories we love the best have those twisty turns!

It’s a good dream. I just want you to go in with your eyes open.

“I’ve always wanted to write a book” or “I’ve always wanted to create a piece of art” is a great start. “Why?” is the question that makes the process worth it especially when it’s hard or expensive in time and resources.

I always wanted to be a writer, since I was a kid. But part of me hoped that having a published book would mean I would be taken seriously, that it would get me noticed. Instead, launch day for my first book felt more like wondering if people would make mean comments and if my kids would see that

That old boss, who was kind of a jerk, won’t change because you landed the podcast or hit the list. That family member who’s never believed in you won’t necessarily be convinced when you do the thing you’ve dreamed of. And guess what?Their reaction was never yours to control.

I want you to do the thing and I’d love to help keep you accountable. Tell me in the comments what your passion project is.🔥

Wonder if my neighbors have any idea how often they wander into my books as characters?

Sometimes all you need to jump start your creativity, whatever your chosen medium, is a good sit on a little porch, watching the world go by.

Fiction.
That’s right.
As I always tell my coaching clients, non-fiction needs the same creative caliber, the same artistry, the same power as great fiction. The reader should want to keep going, should feel curious about what happens next.
Of course fiction and non-fiction are different. They serve different purposes, have different promises to the reader, serve unique roles.
But the principles of great writing, whether as a novel or as a how-to guide or as a memoir or a biography, those principles are the same: how can I tell this in the most engaging, attention-grabbing, interesting, thought-provoking narrative as possible? Great storytelling, whether it’s about dragons in a far away land or how to navigate the dragons in the board room, it all starts with a compelling story.
So, yes, I read great fiction so I can write great non-fiction. And non-fiction also inspires my fiction writing, like a little salt with chocolate, a little savory with the sweet.

What unusual pairings inspire your creativity? Tell me below!

You could be *this* close!
I’ve written almost 30 books, and when I tell you that getting my very first book published was where I almost quit, I mean it. I’m not going all rainbows and unicorns on you over here, but I do want you to know; just because it’s taking longer or it’s harder or it’s not coming together like you thought doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
You really could be *this* close.
Here’s what to do next.

Send this to someone who need the encouragement to keep going 💕

If this is you right now, keep swiping.

The good days and the hard days both count. Neither one gets to decide what your work is worth.

A closed door is information, not a verdict. Keep knocking. There may be more doors just down the hall.

Nobody else can carry your dream for you. That’s not pressure, that’s permission to value how much it matters.

Who came to mind while you read this? Send it to them.🔥
